An electrical storm of static and interference blares forth from the speakers, a receiver scanning bandwidth for messages from a long-abandoned station. Slowly notes emerge from the distortion, building, and looping amid the squall, becoming clearer before dying away as the signal is lost once more.
Butler’s noisiest effort to date, and perhaps also his most somber, uses keyboard and effects to scan for snippets of lost expeditions and recovered wreckage between hissing static. Refrains loop like distress signals, emerging from the noise at a pace that makes it hard to discern when they originated once they have become apparent; and then dwindle into nothingness. The crash site has been found, but it’s too late and now you too are lost.
